YouTube Now Streaming Movies in Canada

Most people are familiar with watching stupid pet videos on YouTube or but not full-length hd movies. Already available in the States, YouTube is now the latest to enter the Canadian movie streaming market. Good timing as Blockbuster has recently announced the closing of their Canadian operations and many people will be forced to look at alternatives. Shaw has increased their competitive eduge earlier this year by allowing subscription based unlimited on-demand movie watching. ZIP.ca has been providing movie rentals by mail for some time as well.

This is a massive market that is emerging and streaming movies is going to be the norm in most Canadian households (if you don’t already do it). However, the ideal model seems to be subscription based, pay one fee a month for unlimited movies on a variety of devices. YouTube is currently charging $4.99 per movie which doesn’t fit well with what consumers actually want. Not only that but the selection on YouTube and Netflix is rather poor. However, Shaw’s and Tbaytel’s Video On Demand service has a great selection of current new releases and old releases (just have to watch on a television).

The best service to choose depends on how you are watching movies in your household. Netflix is on a ton of different devices including most popular game consoles and available online to watch movies on your computer. If you do a ton of movie watching, a subscription based plan is the way to go. The elephant in the room remains bit torrents and p2p clients. The winner will be the one who combines high quality, high speed and low cost.
